M4B vs MP3: which should you choose?
Choose M4B when your audiobook app supports it and you want chapters in one file. Choose MP3 when your player requires it or broad device compatibility matters most. Both can sound good; the app and export settings matter more than the filename.

Choose M4B for a chaptered audiobook
M4B is commonly used for audiobooks in an MP4 container, often with AAC audio. It can keep the narration, chapter markers and cover together in one file. Check that your chosen player reads the chapters before exporting a long book.
The player decides whether to remember your position, create bookmarks or sync progress. Changing the extension alone cannot add those features or create missing chapters.

MP3 is a practical choice for an MP3 player, a car stereo that accepts MP3 files, or an app that does not support M4B. Check the device’s supported formats and file limits rather than assuming any file will play.
MP3 is not just for music. Apple documents importing MP3 audiobooks into Books on Mac. Chapter navigation and remembered progress still depend on the app; a folder of numbered chapter files can help on players that do not read chapter tags.

Neither extension guarantees better sound or a smaller file. Compare the same recording, duration and quality settings. At the same audio bitrate, the audio data takes roughly the same space, with small differences for metadata and the container.
For example, 10 hours at 64 kbit/s is about 288 MB of audio data; at 128 kbit/s it is about 576 MB, before container overhead and cover art. Higher bitrate means a larger file, but it cannot restore detail missing from the source.
Listen to a short sample on the device you will use. Keep the original when converting between lossy formats: another encode can reduce quality. WAV is useful for editing when supported by your workflow; Opus is another compact listening option when your player supports it.

Book2Speech turns an EPUB, PDF or Word document into narration. In the Editor, choose Download audiobook and the format your player supports. This is ebook-to-audio narration, not an uploader for converting an existing MP3 recording into M4B.
Standard narration is free where a Standard voice is available. Premium narration in the Editor uses your plan’s Editor allowance. Free includes one audiobook download for the lifetime of the account, with a maximum length of 10 hours; paid plans have different allowances and length limits.
Ultra’s unlimited Premium listening is separate from its Editor allowance: the Editor includes 20 hours of Premium narration a month. Check Plans before starting a download; the length of the finished recording and the amount of Premium narration are separate limits.

Use an audio conversion tool that supports your source and destination formats. Preserve the original file, choose whether to keep one long file or split chapters, and check the output in your player.
Chapters need to be carried across as metadata or supplied separately; converting or renaming a file does not invent them. FFmpeg documents chapter metadata and MP4/MP3 format handling. Renaming an MP3 to .m4b does not convert the audio.

Is M4B better than MP3 for audiobooks?
M4B is a good choice for a chaptered audiobook in a compatible app. MP3 is useful when your device needs MP3 or you want broad support. Neither extension alone guarantees better sound, bookmarks or saved progress.
Can Apple Books play MP3 audiobooks?
Yes. Apple documents importing MP3 audiobooks into Books on Mac using File → Import. Check the import and transfer workflow for your other devices. M4B remains a useful option when you want chapter markers in one audiobook file.
Does converting MP3 to M4B improve the sound?
No. Conversion cannot restore audio detail already lost. It may change how a compatible app organizes the audiobook, but chapters must exist or be added, and re-encoding can reduce quality.
Is M4A the same as M4B?
Both extensions are used for audio in an MP4 container. M4B conventionally identifies an audiobook, but player behavior varies. Renaming a file does not change its codec, create chapters or guarantee bookmarks.
