Turn a PDF into an audiobook

Textbooks, reports, papers, manuscripts. Drop a PDF, pick a narrator and listen, with the original page in front of you as it’s read.

Sounds like a book, not a page dump

PDFs are made for printing, so Book2Speech rebuilds the reading order first. Running headers, footers and page numbers are dropped. Broken lines and end-of-line hyphens are joined. A paragraph that runs across a page or column break is read as one.
Chapters come from the PDF’s outline, or from headings set larger than the text. The title page, contents and preface are recognised, so you can start at chapter one.

Listening in three steps

1.
Drop your file above, or choose it. It opens in seconds.
2.
Play a few narrator samples and pick the one that fits the book.
3.
Press play. Sign in or create a free account, and chapter one starts right away.

Read along on the real page

•
Follow the narration on the original PDF page, or switch to a clean page or paragraph view.
•
Drop caps are joined back to their word, so chapter openings read naturally.
•
Scans work when they carry a text layer, and many scanner apps add one.
•
Your place is saved per book, so a textbook can be a chapter a day.

Made for whole books

•
265 narrators in 42 languages. Hear the samples, pick one, switch any time.
•
Chapters you can jump between, with a suggested start past the title pages.
•
Read-along text that follows the narrator sentence by sentence.
•
Speed control, a sleep timer and bookmarks.
•
Your place syncs across the web, iPhone and iPad, and Mac (Windows coming soon).

Questions people ask

Will it read the page numbers and headers?

No. Repeated running headers, footers and page numbers are detected and left out of the audio.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes, when the scan has a text layer. An image-only scan has no text to read, so run it through OCR first (many scanner apps and Adobe Acrobat do this).

Can I listen to a textbook chapter by chapter?

Yes. Headings become chapters in the player, your place is remembered per book, and bookmarks mark the pages you want to revisit.

Can I download my PDF as an MP3 or M4B?

Yes. Choose Download audiobook and you get one file with chapters, cover and book details, as M4B, MP3, Opus or WAV. English books can be narrated free with Standard voices, and books in every language with Premium voices, from your plan’s Premium hours. The PDF to MP3 page walks through it.

Is it free?

Yes, in English. Standard voices are unlimited on every plan, Free included. Free also gives you 10 minutes of Premium voices, one book of your own and one audiobook download. Listener includes 3 downloads, Premium 15 and Ultra unlimited, along with more books and Premium hours.
