How to read a PDF aloud on Android

Open Book2Speech in Chrome, drop the PDF and hear it in a natural voice, with chapters and none of the page clutter.

With Book2Speech in Chrome

1.
Open book2speech.com in Chrome and sign in.
2.
Tap the drop area and choose the PDF from Files or Drive.
3.
Pick a narrator and press play. Page numbers and running headers are dropped, and the headings become chapters.

What you get

•
A PDF view that lights up each word on the page as it is read.
•
Speed from 0.75x to 2x, a sleep timer and bookmarks.
•
Your place, synced with your laptop and any other device.

With Select to Speak (built into Android)

It reads what is on screen in the system voice, page numbers included. Fine for a quick look.
1.
Settings → Accessibility → Select to Speak → turn it on.
2.
Open the PDF in Drive, Files or any viewer, tap the accessibility button and drag over the text.

Questions people ask

Is there a Book2Speech Android app?

Coming soon. Book2Speech works in Chrome on Android today.

What about scanned PDFs?

They need a text layer. The Google Drive scanner and many scanner apps add one; a scan that is only images has no words to read.

Is there a size limit?

PDFs up to 10 MB. For a bigger file, export the chapters you need.
