Guide

EPUB to audiobook: the complete guide

From dropping an EPUB to hearing chapter one in seconds, and keeping the result as an audiobook file. Here is how it works and how to get the best result from the books you own.

1. Why EPUB makes the best audiobooks

An EPUB already knows its own structure: which files are chapters, what order they go in and what each one is called. That is everything an audiobook needs. A PDF only knows where letters sit on a page; plain text knows nothing at all.
So an EPUB gives you an accurate chapter list and a first chapter that starts exactly where the author meant it to.

2. What a good EPUB looks like

•
One file per chapter, or clear headings inside one file. Store-bought EPUBs and Standard Ebooks editions are built this way.
•
Real headings, not just bold text. Headings become your chapter list.
•
A table of contents that matches the book. If it doesn’t, the headings take over.
•
No DRM. Copy-protected store files can’t be opened by any third-party app.

3. Chapters, front matter and where the story starts

Book2Speech reads the book in order and sorts every section: front matter (title page, copyright, dedication, contents, foreword), part dividers, the chapters themselves and back matter (notes, index, about the author). A contents page is recognised as a list, not read out as a chapter.
Press play and the player suggests the first real chapter. You can still start anywhere; you just never have to sit through the ISBN.

4. Choosing a narrator

Pick from 265 narrators in 42 languages, each with a sample. The book’s language is detected and its native narrators come first.
•
First-person novels: a voice that matches the character telling the story.
•
Non-fiction: a measured, clear voice.
•
Dialogue-heavy fiction: a lively one.
•
Changed your mind? Switch narrator mid-book and carry on.

5. Listening

Playback starts in seconds and narration stays ahead of you, so a 300-page novel is ready as fast as a short story. Follow along with highlighted text, set a sleep timer, add bookmarks and change speed. Your place syncs across the web, iPhone and iPad, and Mac (Windows coming soon).
Standard voices read English books free and without limit on every plan. Premium voices read every language, with 10 minutes free to try.

6. Keep it: download an M4B or MP3

Want the book in Apple Books, your car or any audiobook app? Open it in the Editor and choose Download audiobook. You get one file with chapters, cover and book details, as M4B, MP3, Opus or WAV. It plays offline, anywhere.
English books can be narrated free with Standard voices, and books in every language with Premium voices, from your plan’s Premium hours. Free includes one audiobook download, Listener 3, Premium 15 and Ultra unlimited.

7. When a file won’t open

•
“DRM-protected or encrypted”: get a DRM-free copy from the publisher, or try another edition.
•
“Too large”: the limit is 10 MB, and big EPUBs are mostly pictures. Remove them in Calibre (Convert → EPUB → Look & Feel) and drop the file again.
•
One giant chapter: the EPUB has no headings. Add them in Calibre’s editor or Sigil, or keep the automatic splits.
•
Narrators in the wrong language listed first: pick the one you want; the list is only a suggestion.

8. Not an EPUB? Drop it anyway

MOBI, AZW3, FB2, DOCX, TXT, RTF and HTML all work directly and get the same chapters and player. The converter pages cover what is special about each.

Questions people ask

Do I get an audiobook file?

Yes, if you want one. Listen in the app straight away, or download the finished audiobook as M4B, MP3, Opus or WAV with chapters and cover. Narrate English books free with Standard voices, or any language with Premium voices from your plan’s Premium hours.

How long does a whole book take?

You never wait for the whole book: playback starts in seconds and narration stays ahead of you. A 90,000-word novel is about ten hours of listening.
